Egyptian Cinema

In postwar and postcolonial Egypt, the key filmmaker to study is Youssef Chahine, whose Cairo Station (1958) shows the influence of Italian new realism.  The characters that live around the main train station of Cairo, from which the film derives its name, all earn their living through the informal economy.  They are hawkers of goods from flower carts, food carts, newspapers and the like.
